Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team play the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles on Wednesday, resulting in a 62-51 win. The Spires are now 18-10 and 13-8 in the KCAC.
Saint Mary started slow, giving up an early lead and being down 12-7 midway through the first quarter. A layup by Daija Planas brought the Spires within one point with just over four minutes to go. Rebecca Gilpin hit the last shot of the quarter, her three cut the Eagle's lead to 19-16. Jerrica Johnson scored the next seven of 11 points for the Spires. This was enough to swing the momentum in favor of Saint Mary, and another three from Gilpin gave USM a 28-23 lead. Tanea Sims made two free throws to end the half, making the score 30-26.
Oklahoma Wesleyan opened the second half with strong offensive output, going on a 9-4 and tying the game at 35. The Spires responded, and with under ten seconds in the third quarter, Paige Pendley scored four straight points and gave Saint Mary a three-point lead. In the fourth quarter, USM cemented their lead with a 12-3 run, putting the Spires up 54-44. Alanis Delgado and Sims closed the game out with free throws, winning 62-51. Johnson led Saint Mary with 21 points on the night.
