Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team hosted the Friends Falcons for the final game of their three-game weekend series, resulting in an 11-9 loss. The Spires are now 8-17 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
The Falcons took an early lead after manufacturing a run in the top of the first inning. Saint Mary was able to take the lead in the bottom of the third when Brendan Roop hit a grand slam to make the score 4-1. After giving up a run in the first, starter Noah Parra threw four scoreless innings to help preserve the Saint Mary lead.
Then in the top half of the sixth, Friends put up five runs on three hits to retake the lead. However, the Spires quickly responded in the following half inning, scoring four runs of their own. Three of those runs in the bottom of the sixth came from a bases-clearing double hit by Caleb McClellan. That big inning made the score 8-6 in favor of the Spires. A two-run home run by the Falcons in the seventh tied the ball game up at eight runs a piece. A lead-off solo home run in the bottom half of the seventh from Wyatt Lowry once again gave Saint Mary a narrow 9-8 advantage. An RBI single in the ninth tied the game and sent it into extra innings, where Friends scored the winning runs after a 2 RBI double made the score 11-9. Roop led the Spires on offense, going two for four with four RBIs and a run scored.
