Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Flag Football team hosted the Midland Warriors in their season opener on Wednesday, resulting in a 43-0 loss. The Spires are now 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the KCAC.
The Saint Mary defense stood out in the first quarter, holding the Warriors scoreless after two trips into the red zone, including one goal line stand. On the following drive, Saint Mary stalled out on the Warrior's 21-yard line. Midland scored on the ensuing drive in just four plays after a failed point-after attempt the Warriors led 12-0.
A quick touchdown by the Warriors to open the second half put the Spires down 18-0. Both teams traded off long drives, taking up most of the third quarter. Saint Mary was held scoreless on offense, while Midland continued to score at will. After the Spires up two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the game ended with a final score of 43-0 in favor of the Warriors. Trinity Scott led the Saint Mary offense with four catches for 52 yards, while Anaya Hooks and Sable Barnes each had five tackles on the defensive side of the ball.
