Softball Swept by Braves in Weekend Doubleheader

Ottawa, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team played a doubleheader against Ottawa University today, losing 9-1 and then 6-2. The Spires are now 18-17 on the season and 1-9 in the KCAC.

Game One

The Braves struck first in game one with a four-run first inning to put pressure on the Spires. The Spires eventually got on the board in the fourth inning as Allyson Dias hit an RBI double to bring in Sadie McWilliams to make the score 4-1. This, unfortunately, was the only run of the game that Saint Mary scored. After Ottawa drove in five runs in the fourth, the Spires had a chance to score in the fifth with a single from Delaney Hess but could not do much more. Ottawa ran away with a 9-1 win. Dias went two for two from the plate with an RBI.

Game Two

Saint Mary struck first at the start of game two with an RBI single by Sadie McWilliams. After the Braves scored to tie it up, Alexis McDaniel hit a home run to give the Spires the 2-1 lead. A five-run fourth inning for the Braves swung the momentum in their favor of them. A double by Victoria Gutierrez in the fifth gave the Spires hope, but the Ottawa defense was able to close the game out for the 6-2 win. McDaniel went two for three from the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
