Softball Splits With Builders, Winning Game Two 3-1

Winfield, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team took on Southwestern College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, resulting in a 9-8 loss and a 3-1 win. The Spires are now 19-22 overall and 2-14 in the KCAC this year.

Game One

Saint Mary got on the board in the first inning with an RBI single down the right-field line hit by Briana Solis. Later in the inning, Solis scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0. The Builders responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the opening inning to tie things up at two. Southwestern scored the next three runs over three innings to take a 5-2 lead over the Spires. Saint Mary erupted in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs. Two RBIs came off the bat of Alexis McDaniel, while singles from Jessica Strandlund and Megan Brinkman also added to the lead. When the inning was all said and done, the Spires were up 8-5. However, the Builders responded by scoring three runs in the sixth, forcing extra innings. Saint Mary was unable to get a run across the plate in the eighth, while Southwestern scored with one out to make it 9-8.

Game Two

The Builders struck first in the second game of the day on a single that got through the left side of the infield. After giving up a run in the opening inning, starter Allie Cox threw five shutout innings and surrendered just four hits. The Spires took the lead in the fourth inning after Brinkman singled down the left-field line and drove in Sadie McWilliams and Victoria Gutierrez. Later Brinkman was driven in by Cox for an insurance run to make it a 3-1 game. That inning was all the Spires needed to shut the door on the Builders for the win. Brinkman led the Spires at the plate on the day, going four for seven with three RBIs and a run score. She was also awarded the save in game two.
