Lindsborg, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team took on the Bethany College Swedes in a doubleheader on Saturday, winning game one 15-9 and losing game two 8-7. The Spires are now 17-28 overall and9-19 in the conference.
Game One
Saint Mary jumped out to an early lead off of an RBI single hit by Brendan Roop and a walked-in run but the Swedes. The Spires continued to build their lead in the second inning by scoring five more runs.
The second was capped off by a solo home run by Jack Knutson to make it 7-0 in favor of the Spires. In the fourth, Noah Parra hit a double to left field that drove in two more runs. That double, along with an RBI single from Keaton Herron gave Saint Mary a 10-0 lead.
The Swedes chipped away at the big USM lead in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, coming within two runs of the Spires. Roop drove in his second and third runs in the top half of the eighth with a single up the middle. Three more runs in the eighth put the game out of reach for Bethany and gave the Spires a 15-9 win.
Game Two
Saint Mary took another early lead in game two, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Bethany responded with a four-run bottom half of the second to come within one run of the Spires.
A two-run third gave the Swedes their first lead of the series and made it a 6-5 ball game. After a scoreless three innings, the Spires took the lead back in the sixth inning with an RBI single from Keaton Herron and an error by the Swedes to make it 7-6 in favor of Saint Mary. However, Bethany won the game in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run RBI single.
