Lee's Summit, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Flagg Football team took on Cottey College in the first round of the KCAC Championship Tournament on Friday, resulting in a 13-12 loss.
The Spire's first drive of the day got them into scoring position, but the drive stalled around the thirty-yard line after an incomplete pass on fourth down. Cottey responded with a four-minute drive that went fifty-three yards and ended in a touchdown for the Comets.
Both defenses held strong throughout the rest of the first half. Saint Mary stopped the Comets on fourth down twice but was unable to find the endzone.
A long catch and run by Cottey gave the Comets a controlling 13-0 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter. Elle Campbell caught a pass from Sable Barnes for a 31-yard touchdown to make it a 13-6 game.
With time running out, Rebecca Ruck caught the second touchdown pass from Barnes, putting the Spires down by one. The following point after the attempt was not converted by Saint Mary, and Cottey ran out the clock for the 13-12 win.
The Spires finished the year 1-10 overall and 1-9 in the conference.
