Crete, Neb – The University of Saint Mary Women's Soccer team took on Doane University today, losing 1-0. The Spires are now 0-1 to start the season.
After a slow start by both teams, Doane rattled off multiple shots that failed to hit the back of the net. Abby Rodgers had a chance to get Saint Mary on the board at the 30-minute mark, but it resulted in a high shot. Later, a shot by Doane late in the first half resulted in a save for Marisol Vargas to end the half with the score 0-0.
Doane came out of the break strong as they took a 1-0 lead two minutes into the half. Saint Mary worked hard to tie things up with a corner kick and multiple shots, but none found the back of the net. The momentum never leaned in favor of the Spires as they fell by a score of 1-0. Vargas recorded seven saves on the day.
