Leavenworth, Kan.– The University of Saint Mary Men's Soccer team played the Avila University Eagles on Wednesday, resulting in a 5-1 victory. The Spire's overall record is now 2-4-2 and 1-2-0 in the KCAC.
Oscar Sandoval and Jose Acosta set the tone early for the Spires, sending two shots on goal that the Avila keeper saved. Minutes later, Ramiro Vasquez put Saint Mary up 1-0 with an impressive goal from 16 yards out. Avila then took multiple shots that failed to hit the back of the net due to strong goalkeeper play from Alec Sharff. Anthony Rangel extended the Spire lead to 2-0 with his goal in the 29th minute to put the Eagles on their heels. Twenty seconds later, a crucial foul on Boris Trejo in the box granted the Eagles a penalty kick that went through to get Avila on the board. Right before halftime approached, Rangel found Matthew Thom for a goal to put the Spires up 3-1.
Romario Harding and Guilherme Caldas had chances right out of the gate to extend the Spire lead. However, the Eagles goalkeeper made impressive back-to-back stops. From there on, Rangel took over the game, scoring in the 58th and 60th minute to cap off an impressive hattrick on the night. Stout defensive play shut down any remaining Eagle attempts as the Spires cruised to a 5-1 victory. Rangel's performance tied Branden Sanchez for the second most points in a single game here at Saint Mary.
