Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Volleyball team played Benedictine College on Tuesday night, resulting in a 3-2 loss. The Spires are now 7-2 overall on the season.
Set one began with kills by Devyn Ford and Madison Folsom to help the Spires grab the early lead. After that, both teams went back and forth until Benedictine went on a 12-point scoring run to jump ahead 20-10. Saint Mary failed to get within striking distance as the Ravens took set one 25-13. Set two began with an extended run for the Spires, highlighted by a kill from Renata Dominguez and Ava Bojanski's service ace to make it 11-4. Benedictine continued to chip away at the USM lead to come within five points, but kills by Keagan Shockley and Courtney Standley solidified the Saint Mary win, 25-21.
Set three started with a 5-point run by Benedictine that was matched with a 4-point Saint Mary run. Errors by the Ravens combined with multiple kills by Folsom then made the score 11-9 in favor of the Spires. However, the Ravens took advantage of multiple miscues by the Spires to win the set, 25-16. Saint Mary set the tone early in set four as Rylee Kenitzer and Abby Rankin combined for a kill and a service ace to give the Spires early momentum. Courtney Standley and Kenitzer then closed the set with back-to-back points to win 25-18, forcing a fifth set. After a slow start for Saint Mary, Shockley got the Spires on the board with a kill. Unfortunately, a late scoring run by the Ravens gave them a 15-10 win. Ivory Howat and Standley combined for 37 assists on the night.
