Lindsborg, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team traveled to play Bethany College on Saturday, resulting in a 64-55 win.
The Spires are now 11-2 overall and 8-0 in conference play.
Tanea Sims and Alanis Delgado combined for the first seven points to give Saint Mary an early 7-6 lead. Another layup from Sims gave USM a three-point lead with five minutes left in the quarter. However, a late scoring run from the Swedes put the Spires down five heading into the second quarter. A three from Demi Aamold cut into the Bethany lead with a three, and later in the quarter, Paige Pendley hit a three to bring the Spires within one.
With just over two minutes left in the half, Alyche Brown hit a free throw to tie the game at 20. Addison Schletzbaum gave Saint Mary the lead with another three, and Delgado added on with two free throws to make 25-22, but two late jump shots put the Swede up by one entering halftime.
After the break, Saint Mary had matched the offensive output of the Swedes but remained behind. Keely Barnard hit a three with under four minutes to go to tie things up at 39. As time wound down in the third quarter, Jaylee Levario and Kate Harter helped regain the lead at 46-41. Sims scored the first ten points for Saint Mary to protect the growing Spire lead. A layup from Pendley and another from Sims gave USM a ten-point lead with under a minute and thirty left in the game. Free throws made the difference down the stretch, leading to a 64-55 win for the Spires.
Sims Led the Spires in points with 25 on the night and 12 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the year.
