Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Ravens

ATCHISON, KAN. - The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team opened their 2024 season on the road, facing Benedictine College in Atchison, KS, in a tough 69-51 defeat. The Spires struggled to find momentum early on, quickly falling behind 15-1. However, they showed resilience, narrowing the gap by halftime to 32-24. Despite their efforts, Benedictine pulled away in the second half, securing the victory.

Key contributors for Saint Mary included Keely Barnard, who led the team with 14 points on 5-15 shooting, including two three-pointers, and contributed three rebounds. Alanis Delgado added 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and made two three pointers from beyond the arc, while Addison Tower came off the bench with a solid 10 points, hitting two three-pointers and adding three rebounds.

The Spires shot just 24.6% from the field and 21.2% from three-point range, which contributed to their offensive struggles. They had 22 turnovers, which, combined with Benedictine's strong interior play, proved challenging to overcome. In terms of rebounds, both teams were nearly even, with Benedictine edging Saint Mary by just one, 51-50. Saint Mary managed to stay competitive in second-chance points, scoring 13 to match Benedictine's efforts. The Ravens found success in the paint against the Spires with a 38-18 point difference.
