Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team hosted the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes on Wednesday, resulting in a 72-57 win. The Spires are now 14-11 overall and 10-9 in the KCAC and are now sitting in seventh place.
Deshaud St. Martin and Demarius Houston gave the Spires an early lead by hitting threes in the first two minutes of the half. After a three-minute scoring lull from each team, Jordan Brown hit a layup and got fouled for a chance at a three-point play. This gave Saint Mary a spark of momentum as Joey Schultz and Kaden Bonner hit back-to-back threes, giving USm a ten-point lead. However, Kansas Wesleyan cut into the lead and pulled within two points of the Spires with five minutes left in the half. Threes from Brown and Blake Chadwick helped keep the Coyotes at bay as Saint Mary entered the break up 42-26.
The Spires continued to press the Coyotes offensively, making layups, receiving fouls, and making free throws, increasing their lead to 19 at one point after another three from Bonner. Saint Mary shut down Kansas Wesleyan's final attempt at a comeback with under five minutes to play. Free throws from St. Martin and Bonner closed the book on Kansas Wesleyan.
St. Martin led the Spires on offense with 20 points, just a week after hitting the 1,000-point mark and becoming the first forward in program history to reach the achievement.
