Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted Missouri Valley for a doubleheader on Wednesday, resulting in a 6-2 loss and a 9-1 win. The Spires are now 3-5 overall on the year.
Game One
Saint Mary went down early, giving up three runs in the top of this first. Another three-run inning from the Vikings in the third gave them a decisive 6-0 lead over the Spires. Desarae Chavez came in to pitch for Saint Mary in that same inning, helping USM stop the bleeding. Chavez finished the game in the circle for the Spires, giving up two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. The bats woke up for the Spires in the sixth inning after Alexis McDaniel hit a one-out triple to left field and later took home on a wild pitch. Abigail Kudym drove in one more run for Saint Mary in the bottom half of the seventh, but the Spires ran out of outs, falling 6-2 in game one.
Game Two
The Spires had the offensive momentum heading into game two and took advantage of it. After the Vikings scored a run in the top of the third, Saint Mary responded in the bottom half of the inning with a four spot. McDaniel stole home this time, while Jessica Strandlund, Allyson Dias, and Kudym also had RBIs in the inning. Audrey Spellman had the day's second triple and an RBI in the fourth inning; McDaniel eventually drove her in to give the Spires a 7-1 lead over Missouri Valley. Saint Mary scored two more runs in the sixth, ending the game 9-1. Allie Cox got the start in game two and went all six innings, giving up one run on seven hits with three strikeouts.
