Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team hosted Bethany College on Wednesday, resulting in a 67-50 win. The Spires are now 22-5 overall and 19-2 in conference play. After the game, four seniors were honored for their hard work and dedication to the team over the years.
Alanis Delgado and Keely Barnard helped give Saint Mary an early seven-point 14-7 lead on the Swedes with two minutes left in the first quarter. A surge of offensive from Bethany late in the first and early in the second made it a three-point ball game. Another three, this time from Demi Aamold, made it a 20-18 game in favor of the Spires with six minutes left in the second quarter. Aamold scored five more consecutive points, and another three from Delgado made it a ten-point game. The Spire offense created plenty of problems for the Swedes in the first half as they entered the break up 35-22.
In the third quarter, the Spires outscored Bethany 15-9 heading into the fourth quarter, up by 19 points. The Swede's offense seemed to ignite in the fourth quarter, but it was a little too late, as time ran out on their comeback, and Saint Mary secured the senior day win 67-50.
Senior Rebecca Gilpin broke the record for most games played in a Spires uniform with 122 in her career. Tanea Sims led the Spires on offense with 20 points and brought down 11 rebounds.
