Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team hosted the Avila Eagles to conclude their weekend series on Sunday, resulting in an 11-8 walk-off win. The Spires are now 8-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Andrew Richardson got the start on the bump for the series rubber game; he went six innings, striking out one with five hits. Richardsons gave up just two runs in the first and fifth innings. Saint Mary responded in the bottom half of the fifth when Caleb McClellan hit an RBI triple to make it a one-run ball game. The Spires capitalized on a throwing error in the sixth, which allowed Daniel Martinez to score, tying the game at two. Avila had a big top of the seventh, scoring three runs to make the score 5-2.
Saint Mary had a big inning of their own in the eighth with an RBI double from Kruz Wahwahsuck and a two-run home run from Jack Knutson. The Eagles took the lead one final time in the ninth, making it an 8-6 ball game. Knutson his second home run of the day in the bottom of the ninth, and Brendan Roop followed with a grand slam to give Saint Mary the 11-8 win over Avila.
