Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team traveled to play the Benedictine Ravens on Tuesday, resulting in a 4-1 loss and a 13-4 win. The Spires are now 7-7 overall to begin the year.
Game One
The Spires struck first in game one after a solo home run from Alexis McDaniel. Desarae Chavez got the start in the circle, and after a four-run fourth inning, she settled in, throwing six innings and allowing four runs with three strikeouts. Sadie McWilliams drove a one-out double into right-center in the top half of the fifth inning, but she was left stranded on the base paths. The Spires could not chip away at the Raven's lead and dropped game one 4-1.
Game Two
Saint Mary took another early lead, this time coming from the bat of Megan Brinkman, who drove in Audrey Spellman. Each team went back and forth in the early innings, with the lead changing hands three different times. Saint Mary tied the game up at four in the top of the fifth with RBIs from Jessica Strandlund and McDaniel. McWilliams gave USM the lead in the sixth by taking advantage of a wild pitch to make it a 5-4 ball game. The Spires added three more runs in that inning to take a comfortable 9-4 lead. McDaniel put the game entirely out of reach for Benedictine with a grand slam in the top of the seventh, giving the Spires a 13-4 win over the Ravens.
McDaniel went 4-7 with six RBIs and four runs on the day.
