Kansas City, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team traveled to take on the Avila Eagles for a conference doubleheader on Wednesday, resulting in two losses. The Spires are now 14-14 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Game One
After a quiet first inning from both teams, Avila drove in two runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead over Saint Mary. The Spires answered in the top of the fourth, getting five runs across the plate. Megan Brinkman drove in Alexis McDaniel to get USM's first run of the day. Later in the inning, Jessica Strandlund hit her first home run of the year to bring Brinkma home to make it a one-run game. Natalie Bruce drove in two runs, adding to the big inning and giving Saint Mary their first lead of the game at 5-4. However, Avila was able to continue to score runs throughout the game, retaking the lead in the bottom half of the fourth and expanding their lead in the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 9-5 ball game. Sadie McWilliam drove in the final run for the Spires in the seventh inning, but Saint Mary was not able to continue the rally and dropped the game one 9-6.
Game Two
The Eagles continued to have a high offensive output in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Saint Mary had chances in the first and second innings with runners on but could not get them across the plate. The Eagles added to their lead with a solo home run in the third and drove in four more runs in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. Saint Mary had runners on in the top half of the sixth and seventh, but they were left stranded, and the Spires fell 7-0.

The Spires will travel to take on the McPherson Bulldogs for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday in McPherson, Kansas.
