Leavenworth. Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted the Tabor Bluejays in a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday, resulting in a 6-5 win and a 9-1 win. The Spires are now 17-15 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
Game One
Saint Mary jumped out in front in the bottom of the first inning after a double to right field from Jessica Strandlund gave the Spiresa 1-0 lead. A one-run top of the second tied things up, but USM responded in the bottom half of the inning with another run after an RBI groundball from Alexis McDaniel to make the score 2-1. Things continued to go back and forth for both teams. In the third, Tabor took a 3-2 lead over the Spires, but in the fifth, Saint Mary retook the lead after RBI singles from Sadie McWilliams and Giana Paape to make the score 4-3. The Bluejays fought hard to again take a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning. However, Saint Mary got the last laugh, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at five runs apiece. Reliever Grace Rose held Tabor scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings to keep the game alive. Paape drove in Alexis Hughes for the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to win 6-5.
Game Two
Allie Cox went all five innings in game two, giving up one run on five hits with one strikeout to help lead the Spirtes to victory. After a one-run top of the first, Saint Mary posted two runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 2-1 lead. The Spires did not look back after taking the lead, scoring one run in the second and two more in the third to give USM a 5-1 lead over Tabor. In the bottom of the fourth, Saint Mary erupted with four runs; Abigail Kudym hit her fifth career home run to give her team a six-run lead. Paape followed with a two-run home run one batter later to seal a 9-1 win over the Bluejays and secure the sweep.
