Springfield, Mo.- The University of Saint Mary Baseball team concluded their weekend series against the Evangel Valor on Saturday, resulting in a 10-6 loss and a 12-1 loss. The Spires are now 16-17 overall and 10-11 in conference play.
Game One
Saint Mary had a big top of the first inning, posting four runs. With the bases loaded, Kruz Wahwahsuck drove in two runs with a double to left center field. A late throwing error by the Evangel shortstop allowed the runner on third and Wahwahsuck to score and take a 4-0 lead. However, the Valor responded with ten unanswered runs, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first, one in the second, and four in the fourth to make it an 8-4 game in favor of Evangel. After a two-run sixth inning by the Valor, Preston Gibson pushed a run across the plate in the ninth after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Wahwahsuck scored the Spire's final run after advancing on a passed ball to make the final 10-6.
Game Two
The bats remained hot for the Valor, as they scored in four out of seven innings in game two. The Spires' first baserunner of the game came in the fourth inning when Eli Prine and Wahwahsuck drew a walk with two outs, but they were left stranded on the bases. Adam Celestino had the first hit for Saint Mary in the following inning with a single to left center; he and Aidan Hartig were also left on base to end the inning. By the end of the sixth inning, the Valor had amassed a 12-0 lead over the Spires. Down to their last out in the seventh, Justin Nunez drove in Lucas Barta with an RBI single to center field to make it a 12-1 ball game. A flyout later in the inning ended the Spires would be two-out rally and ended the series as well.
