Leavenworth, Kan.- The University of Saint Mary Softball team hosted Southwestern College for a mid-week doubleheader on Tuesday, resulting in two 8-0 wins. The Spires are now 23-17 overall and 12-6 in conference play.
Game One
Grace Rose started in the circle for Saint Mary in the first game, giving up one hit in four innings with six strikeouts, a new single-game career high for her. The Spires jumped out in front of the Builders in the first inning after Rose grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Audrey Spelman to score. Later in the first, Alexis McDaniel stole home to give Saint Mary a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the second inning, McDaniel and Spellman had back-to-back RBI singles to extend the growing USM lead. With the bases loaded, Rose hit a triple down the third base line to clear the bases, putting the SPires up 7-0 after two innings of play. McDaniel scored the eighth and final run of the game with an inside-the-park home run, giving Saint Mary an 8-0 win.
Game Two
On the rubber to start game two was Allie Cox, who threw five shutout innings, giving up three hits and striking out five batters. The Spires continued to score early and often after McDaniels and Rose had RBI doubles in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Abigal Kudym extended that lead in the second with a two-run home run in the second to make it a 4-0 ball game. Saint Mary had a big bottom half of the third that started with an RI double from Gianna Paape, an error by the Builders, and a sac fly from Isabella Smith drove in two more runs to make it 7-0 in favor of the Spires. A single down the right field line from Spellman drove in the final run of the day, and Cox retired the side in order to close the door on Southwestern.
