Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Hannah VanCleave

USM Toppled by Kansas Wesleyan

Spire men's soccer hit the road this weekend as they took on the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan in Salina, Kansas at Gene Bissell Field | JRI Stadium. Despite a vigorous effort, the Spires were defeated with a final score of 4-2.

The match began with a competitive spirit with no signs of slowing down as both teams were eager to dominate the play. However, Kansas Wesleyan managed to secure a quick 1-0 lead in the 10th minute from a penalty kick that would propel them into halftime, putting pressure on the Spires. The Spires remained aggressive and evened the score at 1 in the 52nd minute with a goal by Robin Van Voorst assisted by Jude Rodwell. With a quick turnaround in the 59th minute, Van Voorst would be awarded a penalty kick and nail the shot, putting the Spires up 2-1.

However, tides would quickly change just second later when the Coyotes tied it up in the 60th minute. Kansas Wesleyan's Noel Zimbeva, Emilio Rodriguez, Seth Flores, and Shae Wirt each added to the scoreboard, with Seth Flores delivering the decisive game-winning goal. The Spires took a total of nine shots on the evening, two from Bryan Rojas, Robin Van Voorst, and Rylan Nowak. Fellow Spires Matthew Jackson, Alfie Scandle, and Isha Hughan would each mark one shot to the tally. Goalkeeping duties were split between Ricardo Perez and Angel Jacinto, with each guarding the net for one half of the game marking 3 and 2 saves respectively.

This loss places the Saint Mary's current record at 4 wins, 5 losses, and 2 draws, with a conference record of 2 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw. The Spires are scheduled to be back at Berkel to host on Saturday, October 11th at Berkel Memorial Stadium.
