Hillsboro, Kan.- Spire football clinched a big road win 31-7 victory against the Tabor Bluejays in their final cross-divisional battle held in Hillsboro, Kansas. USM posted a huge second quarter, putting up 17 points going into halftime with the lead. Momentum was on the Spires side as they came out of the half with no signs of slowing down, ultimately earning the win with a final score of 31-7.
The first half saw grit from key players and familiar faces such as freshman
Kameron Smith's impressive 28-yard touchdown run and quarterback
Erick Covington's robust performance with 140 passing yards and two critical rushing touchdowns.
Chace Redmond also made a pivotal impact with a 71-yard fumble return touchdown, amplifying the lead and determination to finish strong for the Spires.
Kameron Smith ended the contest with 86 rushing yards and one touchdown. Teammate
Demarkus McCoy close behind with 66 yards, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. On the receiving end,
Michael Gazzana and
Delvin Lewis totaled 56 and 28 receiving yards on the afternoon. Additionally,
Bryce Godfrey was, yet again, consistent in capitalizing on his teammates success by seamlessly executing one field goal and making all four PAT attempts.
The Spires will get a week of rest and preparation, along with the rest of the KCAC, as inter-divisional play will begin Saturday, October 18
th at 1:00 p.m. on our home turf in Leavenworth, Kansas. The Spires will host fellow Bissell Division opponent, the Coyotes from Kansas Wesleyan University who just came up short against the Evangel Valor in a defensive standoff with a final score of 6-7.
