Parkville, Mo.—Spire women's basketball handed the Park University Pirates their first loss on the new season with a dominant final score of 73-58 on Wednesday, November 12
th at Parkville, Mo. This was a great early showcasing for USM as the Pirates are ranked first in the Heart of America conference.
The first quarter set the tone for what was sure to be a competitive evening, with Park scoring the initial points through a layup by Nadiyah Cooper. Sophomore
Addison Tower responded with a timely 3-pointer, giving Saint Mary an early edge. Despite a series of turnovers and fast breaks, Park managed to regain and extend their lead to five points by quarter's end, leading 16-14.
Addison Schletzbaum played a pivotal role, sinking a crucial layup to tie the game momentarily at 10 before the first concluded.
In the second quarter, the Spires fought valiantly to close the gap. Highlight plays included
Abby Wendte's 3-pointer and a big-time layup by
Keely Barnard, although Park extended their lead to 10 points at one juncture. The halftime scoreboard read 31-25 in favor of the Pirates.
The pivotal second half saw USM mounting a comeback, featuring crucial 3-pointers that significantly narrowed the score difference. Key performances by
Jaylee Levario and continued team effort brought the Spires within three points of Park by the period's end, with the score at 50-47.
The final quarter witnessed a Spire team that wasn't backing down, spearheaded by
Abby Wendte and
Jaylee Levario's crucial baskets, which shifted the lead and momentum to the Spires.
Addison Tower's late 3-pointer was instrumental in solidifying the lead, with the defense holding strong to limit Park's scoring opportunities. The Spires emerged victorious with a 15-point lead, underscoring their resilience and ability to dominate on both side of the floor.
