Saint Mary Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Saint Xavier

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary baseball team battled Saint Xavier (Illinois) in a competitive doubleheader on Saturday, splitting the series with a 4-2 victory in Game 1 before falling 3-2 in Game 2.

Game 1: Saint Mary 4, Saint Xavier 2

The Spires got off to a strong start in the opening game, scoring in the first two innings to establish early control. Bryce Turner led the charge, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. His single in the first inning plated Caleb McClellan for the game's first run. In the second, Shawn Marquis added an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0.

Saint Xavier responded with a solo home run from Gabe Kirck in the fifth inning, but Saint Mary answered back immediately. Turner delivered again in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double, scoring Keaton Herron. Kruz Wahwahsuck followed with an RBI single to bring Turner home, securing a 4-1 lead.

Pitching was a key factor for Saint Mary, as Andres Zarate (1-0) delivered an impressive six-inning performance, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out four. Jacob Castaneda closed out the game in the seventh to earn the save, despite allowing a run on a fielder's choice.

Game 2: Saint Xavier 3, Saint Mary 2

In a tightly contested second game, Saint Mary jumped ahead in the second inning. Jovani Reynoso and Maverick Rockers each contributed RBI hits to give the Spires a 2-0 lead.

However, a three-run fourth inning from Saint Xavier proved to be the difference. Michael Flier launched a two-run homer, followed by an RBI groundout from Beau Polickey, giving the Cougars a 3-2 advantage.

The Spires had chances late in the game but couldn't capitalize on scoring opportunities. Despite collecting six hits, Saint Mary was held scoreless after the second inning. Daniel Martinez, Bryant Banks, and Justin Nunez each recorded a hit, but timely pitching from Saint Xavier shut down any potential rallies.

On the mound, Hayden Roop turned in a solid start for Saint Mary, throwing four innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Alex Dilley provided three scoreless innings of relief, keeping the Spires within striking distance.
