Spire Women Stay Hot in KCAC Play

Leavenworth, Kan.—Spire women's basketball was dominant tonight in their first home game back in the New Year. USM cruised past the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles with a final score of 88-60 to continue their recent hot streak in the KCAC, boosting their record to 7-2 in conference play.

The starting five in Addison Tower, Saige Grampsas, Abby Wendte, Mary Olson, and Keely Barnard had their way with the Eagles from the jump, shooting an even 9-18 with all four starting guards recording a three from deep in the first quarter, setting the tone for what would be a successful night in the Ryan Sports Center. Moving into the second quarter the Spires brought their intensity with them, shooting 67% from deep with Barnard going 3-4 from behind the arch. Spire teammates Saige Grampsas and Summer Weineke, who had a rather impressive evening, would also come in clutch for USM by finishing tough layups and dishing out the perfect pass to their teammates.

Not much changed in the second half as the Spires kept their foot on the gas. Wendte and Weineke would continue to add not only to their scoring around the rim but racking up the defensive stops on the other end to continue to frustrate OKWU. In the fourth quarter the USM bench stepped up big time with Cady Huffman, Kate Harter, A'Myah Bankston and Quinn Carpenter adding to the electrifying energy of the USM squad contributing an additional 13 points in the final 10 minutes of action, with Huffman also snatching 2 steals and 3 rebounds. Weineke would continue to impress with her toughness around the basket and help lead her team to another 61% shooting quarter as USM would go on to outscore the Eagles in nearly every quarter of action this evening.

Freshman standout Abby Wendte would finish with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block, Keely Barnard would end her evening with 14 points, 3 assists, and a steal, and Summer Weineke would finish strong with 13 points, 4 assists, and 2 boards.

The Spires are staying home this weekend and will face the Bethel College Threshers on Saturday, January 7th with a 3:00 p.m. tip-off at the Ryan Sports Center in Leavenworth, Kansas.
