Maryville, Mo.—It's no surprise that Spire T&F had another phenomenal showing at the Bearcat Invite in Maryville, Missouri this weekend, hosted by Northwest Missouri State.
Senior standout runner,
Deslyne Cooper had herself a weekend. Cooper broke the all time indoor 400m Spire record and earned herself an NAIA B Standard with a 2
nd place finish and final time of 56.93 in the gutsy race to the finish. Deslyne would add another top 10 finish to her day in the women's 200m. Cooper finished in 10
th place overall with a final time of 25.26.
USM teammate
Haley Sampson also finished in the top 10 in the women's 400, with an 8
th place finish and a final time of 58.27 seconds. Sampson would continue on this high note through the rest of the day, earning a 6
th place finish (out of 44 competing athletes) in the women's long jump with a final leap of 5.41 meters. This finish would keep her at #5 in all of KCAC.
Josie Tyrrell—you may have heard of her before—had another competitive showing in the women's 5K earning 3
rd place out of 30 collegiate runners. Tyrrell finished the 5K with a final time of 17:37, earning herself another NAIA B Standard, keeping her at #1 in the KCAC and #13 in all of NAIA.
On Friday, junior and senior duo
Carly Holadia and
Abigail White earned top ranked finishes in the women's 1,000m run. White secures a 9
th place finish with a final time of 3:01.52 while Holadia finished in 11
th place overall with a finish of 3:04.26 out of 33 competing athletes.
On the men's side, familiar face
Austin Howell had a gritty finish in the 1,000m race. Howell earned himself a 3
rd place finish (out of 51 athletes) a mere second behind the second-place finisher with a final time of 2:29.25. This time places Howell at #2 in KCAC and impressively #22 in all of NAIA.
The Howell brothers showed out in Maryville as
Kenneth Howell would earn himself a strong 5
th place finish (out of 55 athletes) in the men's 5,000m race with a finish of 15:04.44. Close behind Kenneth was freshman powerhouse
Derebe Carr in 8
th place with a final time of 15:13.21.
As the indoor season is winding down, the Spires show no signs of letting up with the KCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships set for next weekend February 13

th hosted at the Heskett Center on campus of Wichita State University.
