Power Surge Sweeps Saint Mary Past Midland

Saint Mary softball blasted five home runs in a double header on Tuesday as they bested Midland in both games by finals of 11-6 and 8-7. The Spires now have a 9-8-1 record on the season.

Every Spire in the lineup had a hit in the first game. Ashlee Vivirito, Ceara Barker, and Mary Silva each had two hits. Maria West, Hannah Gradillas, Kayla Hackney, Samantha Villegas, Olivia Silvey and Emilee Biondo each had one hit. Barker, Gradillas, and West each hit home runs. Jordan Peterson pitched five and two thirds innings to claim the victory in the pitcher's circle. Taryn Kelly pitched in relief as the Spires won 11-6.

In game two, things were a bit tighter. Saint Mary would jump out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first. Midland would score two in the third and three in the fifth inning and lead 5-3 going into the bottom of the fifth. The Spires responded with two runs to tie the game. Saint Mary added three more runs in the sixth. Midland would score two times in the seventh to get the game to 8-7, but the Spires held them there for the win.

West led Saint Mary offensively in the second game getting three hits in four at bats including a home run and driving in four RBIs. Vivirito homered for the Spires and had two RBIs. Ashley Schmidt threw a complete game and earned the win striking out five and walking two. She allowed nine hits.

Wednesday, Saint Mary takes on NCAA opponent Rockhurst. The double header begins at 3pm in Kansas City, MO.
