The Saint Mary women's soccer team headed to McPherson on Wednesday for a chance to jump into sole possession of sixth place. McPherson would not allow it, as the Spires dropped a tough match by a final of 1-0. The loss drops the Spires to 7-7-2 on the season and 3-5-1 in KCAC play.
Saint Mary is tied with Bethany for seventh place in the KCAC Standings but hold the tie breaker from defeating Bethany 2-1 earlier this season. The top eight teams at the end of regular season play qualify for the KCAC Tournament. Two games remain in the regular season.
The first half would see both teams go scoreless. The Spires were kept away from shot opportunities getting off just one shot in the first half. Jessica Ramirez was tested four times in the first half and made saves each time to keep the score at 0-0.
In the second half, Saint Mary would get off two shots but could not find the back of the net. McPherson put three more shots on goal in the second half. The Bulldogs would net the games only goal in the 74th minute to take the 1-0 victory.
Saint Mary will compete in a road match at Sterling on Saturday at 1pm. Sterling is 1-7-1 in KCAC play and 4-11-1 on the season.
