The Saint Mary women's soccer team took on Sterling in a KCAC road matchup on Saturday in Sterling, KS. The Spires battled the Warriors through two overtimes to earn a draw and a point to put them in eighth place of the KCAC Standings and still in qualification for the KCAC Tournament with one game remaining on the regular season schedule.
All the scoring in the game would come in the first half with Sterling getting out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the seventh minute of the match. Rachel Ploetz would tie the game for the Spires just before halftime with Natasha Webster earning the assist. Webster won the ball just inside the box as the keeper tried to come out and the ball trickled toward the goal line. Webster controlled the ball and found Ploetz who drilled home the equalizer.
Saint Mary outshot Sterling 20-17 in the match and put nine shots on goal to Sterling's five. Emilie Korenek played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves while allowing just one goal. Megan McMillen led the Spires in shots with five and Courtney Callahan added four. The Spires also got two shots out of Claire Wilhoite, Sara Ruiz-Payan, and Ploetz.
Saint Mary will host Tabor on Tuesday with a berth in the KCAC Tournament on the line. With a win the Spires would secure a berth in the tourney. Saint Mary could also secure a berth with a Bethany loss against Sterling. Tuesday's game will begin at 5pm at Charles J. Berkel Memorial Stadium.
