USM Baseball Swept by Central Methodist

The Saint Mary baseball team lost all four games to (RV) Central Methodist this weekend. The Eagles, who are 8-4 on the season, beat the Spires by scores of 9-2 and 5-1 on Friday and bested Saint Mary 8-2 and 9-8 on Saturday.

The first game of the weekend saw Daulton East get his first start as a Spire. East allowed just one earned run over the first four innings, but Saint Mary miscues allowed five total runs. Central Methodis would get to East for three runs in the fifth to chase him from the game. Easton Barnes allowed a run in one inning of relief. The Spires were held to just two runs on two hits. Isaias Pulido had a hit and scored both runs for Saint Mary in the loss.

Alex Knight offered another solid start for Saint Mary in game two. Knight went five and a third innings allowing three earned runs. He walked three and struck out three. Zack Novis finished the game tossing two thirds of an inning and allowing one run on one hit. The Spires had five hits in the game. Chase Kearney led the way with two hits. Mel Robles and Kearney each had doubles.

A late three run home run by the Eagles doomed the Spires in game three of the series. Saint Mary cut the deficit to 3-1 entering the sixth inning, but the late blast gave Central Methodist a 6-1 lead. Saint Mary scored two runs on seven hits. Andrew Berry had two hits and an RBI. Jordan Wilkerson had the other RBI for the Spires.

The final game of the weekend was a heart breaker. Saint Mary would push out to an 8-6 lead entering the top of the seventh, but Central Methodist would score three runs in the seventh, and the Spires would be unable to score in their half of the inning leaving them with a 9-8 loss. Robles and Berry were both a perfect three for three at the plate. Berry drove in three runs while Robles drove in one. Guillermo Loera and Jeremy Melvin each had two hits. Novis started on the mound and allowed five runs in three innings. Ryan Benson tossed three innings in relief. Melvin took the loss allowing three runs in two thirds innings pitched.

Saint Mary will take on Park on Wednesday in a double header beginning at 1pm. It will be the home opener for the Spires.
