Spires Baseball Sweeps Park in Home Opener

The Saint Mary baseball team earned a double header sweep of Park in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon. Saint Mary won the first game 6-3 and the second game 13-1. It was the first two wins of the season for the Spires. Park entered the game 8-1 on the season.

Zach Novis started on the mound and threw three shut out innings. Alex Knight earned the win in relief, and Mike Amado earned the save tossing a clean seventh inning. The Spires got out to a 2-0 lead with a run in the second and third innings. Park answered with a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

Saint Mary then rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Guillermo Loera led off the inning with a single, and Ty Banes would pinch run. A Park miscue allowed Banes to advance to second, then Juan Gallardo layed down a sacrifice bunt to move Banes to third. Andrew Berry then lifted a double to right field to score Banes. After a pop out, Isaias Pulido and Shun Tsunoda hit back to back RBI doubles. Jordan Wilkerson drove in the final run of the inning with a single to left.

The Saint Mary bats took over in the second game. The Spires scored 13 runs on 10 hits. Chase Kearney, Wilkerson, Tsunoda, and Berry each had two hits to pace the offense. Tsunoda and Wilkerson each had three RBI. Pulido and Kearney drove in two runs each. Jeremy Melvin and Gallardo each had a hit and an RBI as well. Daulton East tossed three scoreless innings to start the game. Jake Shriver and Easton Barnes each tossed scoreless innings in relief. Ryan Bracamontes threw the final two innings allowing just one run.

Saint Mary will host #10 Tabor on Saturday and Sunday. It is the first KCAC series of the season for the Spires. Tabor is 12-4 on the season. Saturday a double header will begin at 1pm. The first game will be nine innings with a seven inning game to follow. Sunday will be one nine inning game beginning at 1pm.
