Softball Finishes 3-2 at Friends Tourney

The Saint Mary softball team picked up three wins at the Friends Tournament this weekend. The Spires are now 6-10-1 on the season.

Saint Mary opened the weekend with a big 11-2 win over Southwest Christian. The Spires took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the third when they scored four more runs. They then added five more runs in the fifth to earn the run spread victory.

Samantha Torres tossed four innings in the win. She allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out three and not walking a batter. Abagail Gonzales pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Alana Renshaw was a perfect three for three at the plate. Tycee Coplan and Hannah Gradillas went two for three.

Doane would best the Spires in the second game of the tourney 5-0. Saint Mary had just three hits in the game. Carrie Lee held Doane to just two runs over the first five innings, but the Tigers scored three times in the fifth to round out the scoring.

In game three, Saint Mary earned a huge 6-5 win over Midland. Lee earned the win pitching an inning and a third in relief. The Spires trailed 5-0 before scoring five runs in the fourth inning. Nicole DeSimone then drove home the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a two out, RBI single. Gradillas had a team high three hits. Kaila Trowbridge, Kayla Hackney, Torres, Lee, and DeSimone each had two hits.

Lee tossed a complete game while allowing just one run on six hits in a 2-1 win for Saint Mary over Texas Wesleyan in the fourth game of the tournament. Lee struck out four and walked none. Saint Mary scored a run in the first and the fifth innings before holding on for the win. Six Spires had a hit, Gradillas had an RBI.

Baker would take down the Spires in the final game 4-2. With the game tied 1-1 into the final inning, Baker would score three runs. Saint Mary scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but would draw no closer in the loss. Lee tossed another gem going six and a third innings and allowing two runs. She struck out six and walked three. Gardillas again had a team high in hits with two. Torres doubled, and Camille Reyes had an RBI.

The softball team will be back in action on Thursday when they play MidAmerica Nazarene at 2pm in Olathe.
