The Saint Mary softball team split their double header at York on Wednesday. The Spires battled three rain delays in the double header as they fell 10-4 in game one and won game two 4-3. Saint Mary is now 10-19 overall and 3-2 in KCAC play.
Saint Mary took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game one before York answered with four runs in the second. The Spires tied the game with two more runs in the fourth, but York would score five times in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Carrie Lee took the loss pitching four innings and allowing six runs on 11 hits. Lee struck out four and walked none. Saint Mary managed just three hits in the loss. Samantha Torres had a double and scored a run. Tycee Coplan had a hit and an RBI. Maddison Carr had the other hit for the Spires.
Lee went back out to the pitching circle to start the second game and turned in an impressive outing. Lee tossed six and a third innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out three. The Spires led 4-0 entering the final inning and held on for the 4-3 victory.
Abagail Gonzales pitched in relief. Kaila Trowbridge led the Spires with two hits. Lee had a double and two RBI. Alana Renshaw had one hit and one RBI. Nicole DeSimone, Hannah Gradillas, Kirsten Steinbeck, and Coplan each had one hit as well.
The Spires resume play on Saturday when they host Sterling in a double header beginning at 1pm.
