Spires Rally For Win At York College

YORK, Neb. – The University of Saint Mary women's basketball team captured a much needed win against York College, 49-42 Monday night, snapping a four-game losing streak. The Spires are now (2-6, 1-4 KCAC) after they rallied back from a 10-point deficit despite a cold shooting night.

GAME FLOW
The Spires, eager for their first conference win, led the game 6-0 before York came back and scored 15 straight unanswered points. After taking control, the Panthers led by as many as 10 points. Although the Spires struggled shooting as they only shot 26.9 percent from the field, they fought back and took the lead 32-31 in the fourth quarter. It was a great team effort getting everyone involved as there were seven different girls that scored for the Spires. With just under three minutes to play, Lexi Schamberger hit a big three-pointer to take a 43-40 lead. After hitting free throws down the stretch, the Spires snagged their first KCAC win while on the road.

KEY STATISTICS

  • Schamberger had her first game in double digits with 10 points
  • Paige Scheckel had 13 points and six rebounds

COACH'S CORNER
"It wasn't a pretty win but I told the girls they found a way to win. They stuck together and we had a lot of players step up for us. Rachel Newquist had three huge charges that helped give us the momentum down the stretch. Bailey Massoth and Lexi (Schamberger) had big 3's in the second half at pivotal moments. Paige (Scheckel) also did a great job attacking the rim. We told the girls that there are areas we need to fix and improve on, but overall I'm happy with ow they fought through the adversity and came out on top." – Saint Mary head women's basketball coach Katelyn Loecker

WHATS AHEAD FOR THE SPIRES
