The Saint Mary men's basketball team topped Tabor Wednesday night 89-80 in the Ryan Sports Center. The win improves the Spires to 12-11 on the season and 10-7 in KCAC play. Saint Mary now stands alone in sixth place but is just one game back of second place where four teams are tied with 11-6 records in conference play.
The game opened up with the teams trading buckets before the Spires used an 11-2 run to open up a 10 point lead by the 13:09 mark of the first half. Saint Mary would push their lead out to 21 points at one point in the first half before settling for a 13 point lead at halftime.
Tabor would trim the deficit to six points with 6:58 left to play in the game. After the Spires pushed back out to a 10 point lead, the Blue Jays again trimmed the lead to get within five points with 2:01 on the clock. That would be as close as they got, as Saint Mary went on to take the nine point victory.
Demetrius Cady went 11 for 11 at the free throw line and four for seven from three on his way to scoring a game high 25 points for the Spires in the win. Reid Titus added 17 points and Brett Marsh finished with 15. Peyton Meek and Marsh each tallied four rebounds to lead Saint Mary on the boards. Meek also had a team high four assists. Meek and Titus each went three for four from three point range. Meek finished with nine points.
Saint Mary broke their recent cold streak from the floor shooting 54% from the field, 57% from three, and 89% from the free throw line in the win. The Spires tallied more rebounds and assists than the Blue Jays and had less turnovers. The win avenged their previous loss to Tabor in Hillsboro earlier this season.
The men's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday in North Newton at Bethel. The game is scheduled to begin at 5pm. Bethel is 7-17 on the season and 5-12 in KCAC play. The Spires topped Bethel 114-83 at home earlier this season.
