Softball Splits With Benedictine

The Saint Mary softball team earned their first win of the season in the second game of a double header at Benedictine on Sunday. The double header was rescheduled from Saturday and moved to Athcison. The Spires dropped game one 9-1 but bounced back to tack the second game 8-1. The Spires are now 1-7 on the season.

In the first game, Paige Stewart pitched four solid innings before Benedicine chased her from the game in the fifth. In the first four innings, Stewart had allowed just two runs, but the Ravens got three more off Stewart in the fifth. Benedictine would go on to score four more runs in the sixth to take the 9-1 victory. Samantha Torres and Haley Reece had the only hits in the game for the Spires. Torres' hit was a solo home run in the fourth inning to bring the Spires within a run of the Ravens.

The offense broke out for Saint Mary in the second game. Haley Reece went three for five. Maddie Barron and Alana Renshaw each had two hits, and the Spires tallied eight runs on 13 hits in the 8-1 victory. Lindsey Fishman, Cassidy Harbert, Alyssa Cervantes, Kaila Trowbridge, and Torres each had one hit. Torres was brilliant in the pitching circle for the Spires in the win. Torres tossed a complete game and allowed just four hits while walking one and striking out two. She allowed one run in the third inning, but that would be it.

Saint Mary looks to avenge their 13-11 loss to Avila in the Cowtown Classic earlier this season when they travel to Kansas City, MO and take on the Eagle in a double header on Tuesday. The games are scheduled to begin at 1pm.
