The Saint Mary softball team split a KCAC double header at Sterling on Tuesday. The Spires dropped the first game 3-2 but came back for an 8-7 victory in game two. Saint Mary is now 11-28 on the season and 4-8 in KCAC play.
Samantha Torres turned out another solid pitching performance in game one. Torres went a complete game and allowed just three runs on seven hits while striking out three and wallking none. Sterling took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Saint Mary tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth. Sterling scored again in the bottom of the inning but the Spires tied the game again in the top of the sixth. Another Sterling run came in the bottom of the sixth, and the Spires were unable to answer in the seventh taking the 3-2 loss.
Five Spires had a hit in the loss. Lindsey Fishman and Torres each had a double. Torres had an RBI. Maddie Barron, Cassidy Harbert, and Katlyn Schiefen each had singles. Sterling's two home runs proved to be the difference in the game.
Schiefen started in the pitching circle in the second game. Schiefen tossed four innings and allowed one run which was unearned on three hits. Paige Siewert pitched in relief before Torres came in to earn the save. The Spires scored two runs in each of the first three innings to get out to a 6-1 lead. Another run in the fifth and the sixth gave Saint Mary the 8-2 lead before Sterling plated four runs in the sixth. Another Sterling run in the seventh brought the Warriors within one, but Torres retired the final two batters to secure the Saint Mary victory.
Kaila Trowbridge was three for four with a double to lead the offense. Haley Reece, Alana Renshaw, Fishman, Torres, and Schiefen each had two hits. Reece tripled and Maddison Carr had two RBI. Saint Mary scored eight runs on 16 hits and stole five bases in the win.
Saint Mary will be back in action on Saturday when they host Southwestern in a double header beginning at 2pm. The Moundbuilders are 18-15 on the season and 6-6 in KCAC play.
