The Saint Mary softball team earned a double header split at York on Wednesday. The Spires dropped game one 3-2 and came back for a 4-3 win in in extra innings for the second game. Saint Mary is now 7-9 in KCAC play putting them in seventh place of the KCAC Standings.
Saint Mary got the early lead in game one with a run in the top of the first. York tied the game with a run in the second. The Spires regained the lead with another run in the top of the third but the Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 3-2 lead which would be the final score. Haley Reece tripled in the top of the seventh with one out, but Saint Mary could not bring her home in the loss.
Reece finished three for four at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base. Cassidy Harbert, Kaila Trowbridge, and Katlyn Schiefen each had one hit. Lindsey Fishman and Trowbridge each had an RBI. Samantha Torres tossed a complete game taking the tough loss as she scattered eight hits, struck out three and walked one while allowing just three runs.
Schiefen started in the pitching circle in game two, but York chased her in the second inning tallying three runs on four hits. Paige Siewert entered in relief and would finish the game going 6.2 innings and not allowing a run while issuing just four hits. Siewert would earn the win as the Spires rallied. Saint Mary trailed 3-2 after the second inning was complete but scratched across a run when Harbert singled, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch.
In the eighth inning with the game still tied at 3-3, the international tie breaker came into effect with each team placing a runner at second base to start their turn at bat. Saint Mary sacrifice bunted to move their runner to third and scored on a suicide squeeze bunt for the 4-3 lead. York also sacrifice bunted their runner to third in the bottom of the inning but Siewert induced a ground out to third and a ground out to short to end the game.
Saint Mary will be back in action at home this weekend when they host Bethany for a 1pm start. The Swedes are 6-12 in KCAC play.
