The Saint Mary softball team earned a road sweep of Kansas Wesleyan in a double header in Salina on Saturday. The Spires improved their KCAC record to 3-3 and are now 10-23 on the season.
Samantha Torres continued to pitch well for the Spires in the first game of the double header. Torres would toss a complete game that went extra innings and earned the win. She allowed five runs on 11 hits while striking out four and walking two. Kansas Wesleyan would get to Torres for two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead, but Saint Mary tied the game with two runs of their own in the top of the third.
Saint Mary appeared to take control of the game with three runs on two hits and two Kansas Wesleyan errors in the top of the sixth inning. Leading 6-3 headed into the bottom of the inning, the Spires would be unable to hold the lead as the Coyotes tied the game with three runs on two hits and one Saint Mary error. Cassidy Harbert's two out, RBI single in the top of the eighth would give Saint Mary the lead again and this time the Spires held on as Torres tossed a clean bottom half of the inning for the win.
In game two, Paige Siewert tossed her best game of the season going four innings and shutting out the Coyotes. Katlyn Schiefen tossed one scoreless inning as well. Harbert paced the offense with three hits. Maddie Barron added two as the Spires scored nine runs on 10 hits in the 9-0 victory.
The softball team will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Tabor at 1pm. The Blue Jays are 14-15 overall and 6-2 in KCAC play.
