NORTH NETWON, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary men's soccer team answered both goals scored by Bethel Wednesday night as the game ended in a 2-2 double overtime draw. Brian Alvarez and Rodney Smith scored both goals for the Spires.
Saint Mary is now 2-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the KCAC on the season.
GAME FLOW
Bethel scored in the first 10 minutes with a goal from Aymane Fahmi, but the Spires answered quickly. Just three minutes later, Alvarez found an opening in the defense and scored to tie the game at one apiece.
The game would go to halftime tied at one. With just over 27 minutes left in the second half, Bethel added its second goal of the game to take a 2-1 lead. But, with just five minutes left in regulation the Spires answered to once again make things interesting as Smith scored to tie the match at two.
Saint Mary held Bethel to just one shot in the overtime periods, while nearly taking the victory home. Smith missed on two shots in the overtime period, while Jesse Dominguez, Jay Willcutt and Santana Castro also almost gave the Spires the win.
