Braves Defeat Spires, 39-3

OTTAWA, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary football team suffered a 39-3 loss to Ottawa University Saturday afternoon.

The Spires are now 0-9 overall and 0-8 in the KCAC.

Ottawa jumped out to a quick 20-0 lead in the first quarter with their first touchdown coming at the 9:28 mark of the period. Saint Mary tried to get their offense going, but the Braves defense stifled them including forcing a turnover, which later turned into a touchdown for Ottawa.

Both teams struggled in the second quarter to get things going. Ottawa was able to connect at the 5:13 mark on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Ottawa led 26-0 at halftime. The third quarter was all Braves as well as the offense for USM was unable to gain any momentum. Ottawa tacked on another touchdown with 57 seconds left in the quarter to take a 32-0 lead.

The Spires managed to get on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter as CJ Erwin connected on a 37-yard field goal. Ottawa was able to come out in the end.

Troy Temmink led the passing attack with 78 yards on 10-of-21 passing. Matthew Graham rushed for 77 yards on 25 carries and Bryan Barnhart had 66 yards on six receptions.

The Spires travel to Newton, Kan. on Nov. 9 for a game against Bethel College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
