WINFIELD, Kan – The University of Saint Mary baseball team continued KCAC play on Saturday against Southwestern College, falling 6-3 in the first game before taking the second matchup 9-2 at Broadway Recreation Complex.
The Spires are now 5-9 overall and 3-6 in the KCAC.
In game one, the Spires struck first with a run in the second inning as Oscar Osorio scored on a sacrifice fly ball. Southwestern would tie the game at one a piece in the third. Southwestern took a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning.
Bryan Fuentes would add another run for Saint Mary, scoring on an error. The Moundbuilders added their sixth run in the bottom half of the seventh to take a 6-2 lead. Saint Mary then added a run in the ninth with two outs as Daunte Freeman scored on a single from Osorio, but Southwestern would win.
Osorio added a team high three hits for the Spires. Matt Weis took the loss on the mound for the Spires.
Saint Mary struck for three runs in the second inning of game two to take a 3-0 lead. Troy Hughes and Brayden Carr scored on a double from Antonio Valentin. Peyton Garvin would later come around on a ground out from Matt Ladd.
Saint Mary added three more runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. The Spires added a ninth run in the seventh when Daniel Gonzales scored on a sacrifice fly ball from Fuentes. Southwestern would add a run in the bottom half, but the Spires retired the side in the inning to take the second game.
Osorio and Ladd each had two hits for the Spires, while Ladd led the team with four RBI. Yanthony Navarro took the win on the mound for Saint Mary.
