Baseball Splits With Braves

OTTAWA, Kan – The University of Saint Mary baseball team continued KCAC play on Saturday against Southwestern College, falling 6-3 in the first game before taking the second matchup 9-2 at Broadway Recreation Complex.

The Spires are now 6-12 overall and 4-8 in the KCAC.

In game one, the Spires and Braves were neck and neck through six innings. Ottawa led 3-2 as Peyton Garvin and Matt Ladd each scored for the Spires. Saint Mary then tied the game up at three in the seventh when Ladd scored on a double from Daunte Freeman.

The eighth inning would prove to be too much for Ottawa as Saint Mary erupted for six runs. Bryan Fuentes scored on a Braves' error before the Braves walked in Damian Lomeli and Alex Guevara-Moya with the bases loaded. Ladd, Garvin and Freeman would later score on singles from the Spires.

Adrian Cardenas earned his first win of the season on the mound for Saint Mary. Ladd and Freeman each had three hits for the Spires with Freeman knocking in three runs.

In game two, the teams kept things close between each other once again. Ottawa started out leading 1-0, but the Spires struck for three runs in the second inning. Fuentes scored on a single from Antonio Valentin before Gering advanced to third on a single from Alexis Ramos, but stretched it into a run on an Ottawa error. Ramos later scored on an RBI groundout from Ladd.

Ottawa would tie the game in the fourth inning, but Fuentes would give the Spires a 4-3 lead in the sixth as he scored on another single from Ladd. Ottawa would strike back however, posting four runs in the seventh and eventually took the 7-4 win.

Fuentes led the Spires with two hits and Ladd had a team high two RBI's. Yanthony Navarro was hit with the loss on the mound for Saint Mary.
