Softball Splits With CSM Wednesday

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Coming off two big KCAC wins on Tuesday, the University of Saint Mary softball team split with the College of Saint Mary (Neb.) Wednesday afternoon, falling 8-0 in five innings and winning 7-4 in the second game.

Saint Mary is now 6-16 overall on the season.

The Spires had a rough outing in the first game against the Flames as they fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. Saint Mary (Neb.) would silence the Spires' bats all game long. The Flames picked up two more runs in the third inning and three runs in the fifth to close the game out in five innings.

The Flames' Abby Straight threw five shutout innings and did not allow a hit, while striking out seven. Paige Siewert was hit with the loss for the Spires.

In the second game, the Spires' bats awoke after tying the score at two in the first inning. Kai-Tierra Anderson led off with a single and later scored on an error. Samantha Torres would later triple to bring around Hailey Reece in the inning.

After retiring the Flames in the third inning, 1-2-3, Saint Mary (Kan.) added three runs in the bottom half. Anderson scored on a single from Alexis Solis, while Solis later scored on a single from Camille Reyes. Ashley Whaley would later bring Torres around to score on a single as the Spires led 5-2.

After the Flames tacked on a run in the fourth, the Spires would add two more in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead. Torres and Whaley each scored on an error by the Flames in the inning. The Flames added a run in the seventh, but that was all they could muster as Torres threw the complete game to earn the win.

Whaley led the offense going 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Saint Mary travels to Winfield, Kan. on Saturday where they will take on Southwestern College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
