LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary baseball team fell 7-2 to Tabor College Friday afternoon in the first game of a three game series. Yanthany Navarro struck out a career-high seven batters for the Spires, but would turn in a no-decision.
The Spires are now 11-27 overall and 8-23 in the KCAC.
It was a pitcher's duel early as both teams were scoreless through the first three innings. Navarro had already tied his previous career high of five strikeouts in the first two frames. Saint Mary would score the first run of the game in the fourth inning after Daunte Freeman hit a one-out double down the left field line. David Ramirez then brought him around to score on a single to left field as the Spires led 1-0.
The BlueJays would threaten with two runners on base in the fifth inning, but were unable to cash in. Navarro would throw five innings before Adrian Cardenas came in to pitch. Tabor would record three straight doubles and take a 2-1 lead in the game.
Tabor would extend the lead to 3-1 in the seventh inning, before Saint Mary cut the deficit to one in the bottom half as Bryan Fuentes hit a deep double to center field to score Damian Lomeli. Fuentes was out on the play however as he tried to stretch it into a triple, but was tagged out.
Tabor would tack on a run in the eighth inning with a home run, before adding another three runs in the ninth on a home run from Jason Wallace, his second of the contest.
Cardenas took the loss for the Spires, while David Ramirez and Lomeli each had two hits.
