LEAVENWORTH, Kan – The University of Saint Mary baseball team split with McPherson College Saturday afternoon, falling 11-1 in seven innings and defeating the Bulldogs 2-1, also in a seven inning game.
The Spires are now 9-18 overall and 7-11 in the KCAC.
McPherson would lead Saint Mary 2-1 after the first inning in game one. Daunte Freeman doubled in the first inning for the Spires to score Peyton Garvin. The score would stay that way until the fifth inning when the Bulldogs posted six runs in the fifth inning to break away from the Spires.
Saint Mary had a few chances to cash in on offense in the third and fourth innings, but McPherson held them scoreless.
Matt Ladd led the Spires with two hits on offense. Easton Barnes took the loss on the mound.
In game two, both teams stayed neck-and-neck the entire way. Garvin hit a one-out double in the first inning and would later score on a sacrifice fly ball hit by Antonio Valentin. Troy Hughes later singled to knock in Freeman as the Spires led 2-0.
McPherson would score one run in the fifth inning, but nobody else would cross the plate for the Bulldogs. Freeman picked up two hits in the game and went the distance on the mound for the Spires. Freeman earned the win and allowed just one run along with striking out seven batters.
