LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – A stagnant effort by the University of Saint Mary football team's defense kept the Spires in a tough battle with Tabor College, but the Bluejays would prevail in the end defeating USM 20-0 Saturday afternoon at Berkel Memorial Stadium.
Saint Mary is now 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the KCAC on the season.
After a three-and-out for the Spires to begin the game, Tabor drove down and converted a third down to get the ball to the USM 23 yard-line. The Bluejays quarterback Trey McGee found an opening and sprinted 23 yards to put Tabor up 7-0 in the first quarter.
Tabor would add a field goal late in the quarter and take a 10-0 lead into the second quarter. The Spires offense would find themselves in the redzone late in the second quarter after a field goal from Tabor. Cameron Hudson converted five straight opportunities – rushing for 42 yards on the drive. USM could not convert to find points however and trailed 13-0 at the break.
The Bluejays would receive the second half kickoff and went three-and-out to start. The Spires were left with great field position at the Tabor 34-yard line, but a miscue led to a defensive touchdown for the Bluejays, as they took a 20-0 lead. The offense tried to click on all cylinders for the Spires, but the Bluejays were able to keep them out of the endzone late – eventually taking the win.
Hudson led the offense with 128 total yards (45 rushing). Fred Daughtry led the receivers with 30 yards on three receptions. Heath Southwick had a team high seven tackles, while Hunter Patterson and Hennessey Thomas each had a sack.
