WINFIELD, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary football team faced their toughest test thus far against Southwestern College – a team that was coming off a huge upset over conference powerhouse Kansas Wesleyan University a week ago. The Spires fell behind early and could not keep pace with the Moundbuilders' offense, falling 59-3.
Saint Mary is now 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the KCAC on the season.
The first half was all Southwestern College as they posted 52 points. The Moundbuilders scored on their first two possessions and led 14-0 after the first period. Saint Mary was unable to click on offense as the Moundbuilders forced several three-and-outs in the first half.
The Spires would manage to kick a field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter from Chris Felts. Saint Mary would reach the redzone one last time late in the game, but turned the ball over on downs at the Southwestern 16-yard line. The Moundbuilders would end the game with the win.
The Spires managed just a total of 52 passing yards between Franco De Luca and Cameron Hudson on the day. De Luca also led the rushing attack with 33 yards on eight carries, while Jordan Hill had 34 yards on two receptions.
Hennessey Thomas led the defense with 13 total tackles and Chinedu Nwadike had one sack.
