Baseball Falls To Ravens Sunday

ATCHISON, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary baseball team returned to action on Sunday afternoon, where they fell 9-2 to Benedictine College in the first of two games in the series.

Saint Mary is now 0-5 overall on the season.

Benedictine jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning against the Spires. Mark Lewis got USM on the board in the second inning after scoring Damian Lomeli on an RBI groundout. The Ravens added another run in the third and took a 3-1 lead heading into the fourth inning.

After a scoreless fourth frame by both teams, the Ravens tacked on three more runs. Saint Mary tried to get their offense rolling in the sixth and seventh innings, but BC was able to allow four baserunners in the two innings combined. After BC scored a run in the seventh inning, USM had four players reach base in a row with one out. During the sequence, Alex Guevara-Moya scored on a single from Peyton Garvin to cut the lead to five. Benedictine would add two more runs in the bottom of the eighth and won the game after a scoreless ninth.

INSIDE THE STATS:
- Daunte Freeman led the Spires with two hits.
- Benedictine had 13 hits in the game.
- Korbin Hiebert and Johnny Vasquez combined for five strikeouts.
